This thesis aims to examine Luigi Pirandello’s U Ciclopu, a translation and adaptation into the Sicilian dialect of Euripides’ satyr play The Cyclops, by focusing on the following key conceptual areas: the reception of classical drama in twentieth-century Italian literature within the contemporary cultural context — viewed as a dialogue between rootedness in a local identity and an openness to a broader European modernity —, the relationship of derivation and rewriting of the work from its model, the reinterpretation of the themes and characters of the ancient myth, and their subsequent integration into the framework of the Sicilian author's theatrical and poetic sensibility.
