This thesis examines the tomb of Fina Buzzaccarini in the Baptistery of Padua Cathedral, exploring the relationship between patronage, individual memory, and the self-representation of the Carrara dynasty. The analysis compares documentary and narrative sources, antiquarian accounts, surviving material evidence, and scholarly interpretations, distinguishing attested facts from proposed reconstructions. An examination of her will, dated 22 September 1378, highlights Fina’s decisive role in choosing her burial site, providing a liturgical endowment, and establishing perpetual prayers for her soul. Her initiative is considered in relation to the roles of Francesco il Vecchio da Carrara, ecclesiastical authorities, and the artists involved, while responsibility for the design of the tomb and the decorative programme remains an open question. The form of the tomb, now only partially preserved, is discussed through comparisons with the tombs of Ubertino and Jacopo II da Carrara and an examination of the votive lunette by Giusto de’ Menabuoi. The tomb’s integration with the paintings and the building’s baptismal function allows Fina’s commemoration to be understood within the Christian framework of salvation. The subsequent addition of Francesco il Vecchio’s tomb, documented in 1398, gave this commemoration a conjugal and dynastic dimension. The study thus offers a reading of the Baptistery as a space in which Fina’s personal memory gradually became intertwined with that of the Carrara family while retaining its distinct identity.
