This thesis aims to provide an overview of the various meanings and interpretations that have been attributed to the concepts of Caesarism and Bonapartism. It begins by examining Napoleon's reading and interpretation of Julius Caesar, with whom he measured and compared himself. It then traces the evolution of these concepts following the rise to power of Napoleon III, before concluding with the interpretation developed by Gramsci during the Fascist period in the twentieth century.
