Foeniculum vulgare Mill. is a medicinal plant widely used in traditional medicine and modern phytotherapy thanks to its numerous biological properties. This thesis aims to analyse the main scientific evidence regarding the role of fennel in women’s health, with particular reference to its uses in gynaecology. Following a description of the plant’s botanical and phytochemical characteristics and its traditional uses, the thesis examines the experimental and clinical studies that have assessed its efficacy, with particular attention to the treatment of primary dysmenorrhoea and other conditions related to women’s wellbeing, such as the menopause. The aim is to provide a critical overview of the currently available knowledge, highlighting the therapeutic potential of Foeniculum vulgare, the possible mechanisms of action and the limitations of the scientific evidence currently available.
