Shockvertising is not a new phenomenon in the field of advertising strategies. Examples of provocative communication can be observed in this sector as early as the second half of the twentieth century. Since then, however, the spread of this technique has never stopped. Over the years, people have found themselves increasingly exposed to a growing multitude of advertising stimuli, making it necessary for companies to find simple and effective ways to stand out from this vast sea of information. Provocation therefore becomes the solution: whether achieved through sexual references, violent images, or controversial opinions, its effects are always immediate attention, enhanced memorability, and a strong emotional impact. Brands benefit from the use of shockvertising through increased brand awareness and strengthened positioning. However, provocative advertising is a tool that is as effective as it is double-edged, carrying the risk of negative reactions from the public, brand vampirization, and severe reputational damage. This thesis aims to analyse in detail the different forms of shockvertising, the advantages and disadvantages associated with this technique, and its evolution over time until reaching the contemporary context. The analysis will be conducted through the examination of both historical and recent case studies, including the well-known collaboration between Benetton and Oliviero Toscani, Calvin Klein’s campaigns of the 1980s, Tom Ford’s campaigns of the 1990s and 2000s, Balenciaga’s “Gift Shop” campaign of 2022 and “Great Jeans” campaign by American Eagle in 2025.

Abstract
The analysis will be conducted through the examination of both historical and recent case studies, including the well-known collaboration between Benetton and Oliviero Toscani, Calvin Klein’s campaigns of the 1980s, Tom Ford’s campaigns of the 1990s and 2000s, Balenciaga’s “Gift Shop” campaign of 2022 and “Great Jeans” campaign by American Eagle in 2025.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
