Beyond Contractualism. The Scottish Enlightenment between Bernard Mandeville and David Hume

My thesis aims to provide a general overlook on the social contract theory, whose great influence on Western political thought is undeniable, to then present and examine the alternative theories elaborated by one of the most prominent thinkers of the Scottish Enlightenment, David Hume, and one of the main influences on his philosophical thought, Bernard Mandeville. My work takes into consideration the similarities and the differencies between their political theories, as well as the notions that allow to overcome the limits of the contractualist logic.

L'elaborato si pone l'obiettivo di fornire una panoramica generale della teoria del contratto sociale, la cui grande influenza sul pensiero politico occidentale è innegabile, per poi presentare e prendere in esame le teorie alternative elaborate da uno dei più importanti pensatori dell'Illuminismo Scozzese, David Hume, e uno dei suoi principali ispiratori, Bernard Mandeville. Vengono presi in analisi le differenze e i punti di contatto tra le loro teorie politiche, nonché i concetti che permettono di superare i limiti della logica contrattualista.
