Although Antarctica is called the continent of extremes and is usually conceived as a pristine territory, scientific evidence shows that human activities on a global scale have led to the introduction of contaminants mainly due to the burning of fossil sources, the discharge of wastewater and the spillage of oil into soil, snow and biota. In particular, the organisms that inhabit this region are highly susceptible to the effects of environmental stress and the toxicity of possible contaminants, among which we find Bisphenol-A. This organic synthetic compound shows a high potential for bioaccumulation in the tissues of Antarctic marine organisms. For this reason, in the present work the intestinal tissues of teleost -Trematomus bernacchii - following exposure to BPA were analyzed, evaluating in particular their oxidative stress, that is an imbalance between the production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and antioxidant defenses. The various biochemical tests carried out have allowed us to highlight oxidative damage to lipids or "lipid peroxidation" and the response of antioxidant enzymes in the intestinal tissues of this species, taking into account individual and instrumental variables. The results showed particularly marked effects on advanced protein oxidation products (AOPPs) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity. The paper concludes with a discussion of the results applied to concepts of animal ethics that assess the moral conflict between environmental protection and the welfare of the animals used in the tests.
