The aim of this paper is to apply the Morphological Quality Index (IQM) in two reaches of the Adige River (northern Italy). The first rich is located in alluvial plain and the second one in a foothills zone. For this purpose, the old data from 1950, were compared with the data collected in the last years, bearing in mind that in the last sixty years there were important changes of river channels related to the human interventions. Data and methods used in this study are photos, stratigraphic sections, maps, and field surveys. All of these operations are necessary to compile the evaluation sheets in order to obtain the IQM for both river stretches, and to assign to each one the appropriate class
