The purpose of this study is to analyze salt marsh deposits of the Lagoon of Venice through the study of undisturbed samples of sediment. Nowadays the Venetian Lagoon is often studied for its peculiar environment and for its history, especially since it has been declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987. One of the features that makes Venice unique is that it was built over salt marshes, a relatively unstable environment for a city that was destined to flourish for seven centuries, thanks to the continuous balancing between human activities and safeguard of the lagoon. This study comes from the importance of salt marshes in the lagoon environment and in its evolution during the last centuries. The studied area is located about 10 km towards E-NE from Venice, close to Lido di Jesolo. Since there are no previous sedimentological studies about the morphodynamic evolution of salt marshes in this area, this paper aims at clarifying the sedimentary of salt marshes through the recognition of different types of sedimentary facies and statistical analysis. The work consist of four main chapters: geomorphological overview, sampling and surveying methods, results, discussion and interpretation. The first chapter has the purpose to describe the studied area from a morphogenetic point of view. The second one aims at clarifying the sampling procedure and the statistical methods. The third chapter shows the results of sedimentological and statistical analysis. The last chapter deals with the interpretation of the sedimentary sequence and reconstruction of depositional history.
