The onset of dynamic stall on helicopters pitching blades produces massive excursions in the aerodynamic loads that may couple with structure dynamics and cause its earlier failure. In this work dynamic stall is observed on a pitching NACA 0012 airfoil, whose flow is solved through RANS equations. The CFD results are studied with Spectral POD (SPOD) in order to identify new coherent structures underlying the evolution of the phenomenon. POD and SPOD are compared through loads reconstruction.

Abstract

The onset of dynamic stall on helicopters pitching blades produces massive excursions in the aerodynamic loads that may couple with structure dynamics and cause its earlier failure. In this work dynamic stall is observed on a pitching NACA 0012 airfoil, whose flow is solved through RANS equations. The CFD results are studied with Spectral POD (SPOD) in order to identify new coherent structures underlying the evolution of the phenomenon. POD and SPOD are compared through loads reconstruction.
