PURPOSE: In physiological condition the accommodative response to consensual accommodative stimuli is considered equivalent in the two eyes. The aim of this study is to verify this balance response for iso-accommodative stimuli by submitting a student’s population to environmental tests that try to recreate the most natural visual conditions. METHODS: Forty-one subject aged between 20 to 25 years old in physiological condition were recruited and examined. They were subjected of preliminary anamnesis after verifying the refractive condition, the balance of correction at distance and the ocular dominance. At near it was verify the balance state of vision, the subjective perception of monocular field of balance test, the accommodative response with dynamic retinoscopy, the eye dominance at near vision and finally the amplitude of accommodation. Reviewing the collected data has been selected a group of twenty eight subject subdivided into three subgroup based on subjective perception of balance test field. RESULTS: The group selected showed asymmetric response of accommodation in 46% of cases of variable entity. The 71% of subject with equal subjective perception showed an equal accommodative response whereas the most of subject of the two group with preferential perception respond abnormally, the accommodative response doesn’t agree with the perception. It was verified with a hypothesis test that a subject with an equal subjective perception has, on average, a difference in the accommodative response significantly different from a subject with a preferential subjective perception. Finally, wasn’t detected “the guide rule” in accommodative response by the dominant eye whereas there could be a relationship between subjective perception and eye dominance. CONCLUSION: The accommodation is a dynamic process subject to varying fluctuations over time and could be influenced by various factors not purely visual. However this study showed that in the same cases it could be found an accommodative aniso-response that could be able in helpful in various necessity. Finally, if there is a preferential subjective perception, this isn’t always a reliable evidence of objective accommodative response.
