The aim of this work is the understanding of the behaviour of smouldering combustion occuring in a porous matrix of pine bark, as well as in biomass mixed with sand. These porous media were characterized in term of different porosity and permeability, mainly varying the grain size of the material particles. These properties were monitored during the front propagation and it has been analyzed how they affected pressure drops, temperature, burning speed and the smouldering ignition
