The issue of interoperability between software is deeply intersting in the construction sector, in fact, it would lead to a significant reduction in time and costs. The thesis aims to analyze this aspect in energy simulation environments, in particular, it examines the degree of interoperability between the BIM authoring software, Revit, and the Edilclima energy analysis software, to arrive, if possible, at the digitalization of thermal bridges and shading, which characterize the energy behavior of the envelope of buildings. To achieve the required results, it was decided to carry out an energy diagnosis on the building studied. The first chapter of the thesis deals, for this reason, with the theme of energy simulation and diagnosis, explaining the phases and purposes. Subsequently, it focus on the topic of the envelope, and therefore an in-depth study is carried out on thermal bridges: how they are formed, how they negatively affect energy performance and what consequences they can lead to. Then, introduced the discipline, it will be illustrated which are the most widely used software for carrying out an energy analysis, with a particular focus on Edilclima and its software EC700 "Calcolo delle prestazioni energetiche degli edifici ", of which the degree of interoperability with BIM authoring software will be investigated. Related to this issue is that of standards for data interchange, and in particular the open formats IFC and gbXML, whose structure is explored in the fourth chapter of the thesis. It emphasizes the importance of using Building Information Modeling as a technology from which it is possible to generate files in an open format, which facilitate the exchange of information, without losing data from one software to another. The EC700 software, produced by the Edilclima software-house, has the ability to import an IFC as an input file. Within this type of file it is possible to enter a lot of information, even of an energy nature; therefore it is wanted to find out what information is transmitted by this type of file, generated with Revit, to the EC700 software, and which are particularly necessary for the purposes of the analysis to be carried out. There are two methodologies for carrying out an energy analysis by creating the geometry and populating the information model in the authoring software. The first, as mentioned, is to create the BIM model, export an IFC file of it, and subsequently import it into the analysis software; the second uses a plug-in for Revit, EC770, also enveloped by the software-house Edilclima. This second proposed process does not use open formats such as IFC, but directly exports a file that can be read by the EC700 program. In order to explore the EC700 software in detail, to study which method is actually more functional, the energy diagnosis was carried out. The results of the two methods, obtained by carrying out an energy diagnosis on an existing building, were then compared, and for each of them we can list some positive and other negative points. By exporting an IFC file and subsequently importing it into the EC700 software, all the geometric information necessary for carrying out the calculations, information on the positioning of the thermal compartments and on the extension of the thermal zones are transmitted. It is not possible to import information relating to thermal bridges and building shading, which are instead calculated in EC700. Importing via the plug-in, on the other hand, does not require the creation of a file in IFC format, and thanks to this tool it is possible to assign, in Revit, information regarding thermal bridges and shading, which are then imported into EC700.

Interoperability analysis between BIM model and energy simulation environments: IFC standard for thermal bridges and shading digitalization
