La tesi si propone, dopo una breve panoramica sulla biografia ed i temi inerenti all'autore, di analizzare l'opera filmica nel dettaglio e nel suo insieme, studiando la sua struttura narrativa, la fotografia, la trama, il rapporto con fascismo e comunismo e la fedeltà nell'adattamento dell'omonimo romanzo di Alberto Moravia.
