This thesis is inspired by the “I-MovE. An intervention to promote movement outdoors at the nursery: benefits for motor, cognitive and socio-emotional development ". This project provides an intervention in kindergartens to promote movement in the open air which in turn promote motor, cognitive and emotional benefits. The thesis, connecting with the aforementioned project, focuses on the numerous benefits given by outdoor physical activity to kindergarten children. It involves an analysis of the literature and a concrete path of activities that can be implemented in kindergarten. The motivation that prompted me to write this thesis derives from the fact that in Italian schools less and less importance is given to physical education and the hours dedicated to the discipline are decreasing more and more. In addition to this, the lessons and activities offered are increasingly inside the school building. The pandemic has accentuated these shortcomings. Numerous research affirms that both being outdoors and practicing physical education consistently bring numerous benefits. The thesis is made up of three chapters. The first chapter briefly explains the aspects on which the analysis of the literature has been focused: motor development, socio-emotional development and cognitive development. In the second chapter the definition of motor activity is presented and analysed. Some research is reported on motor activity levels in preschool, both before and after the pandemic. A sections of the chapter is dedicated to the teaching of motor activities. In the second part, the benefits deriving from physical activity and outdoor activity for children aged three to six were examined. In the last chapter the I-MovE project is presented. The reasons that favoured the design and the tools used for the research are described. A possible development of the current programme for kindergarten children has been proposed, accompanied by theoretical and methodological references to support this. In the latter section the evaluation of the children is also examined.
