IL FENOMENO DEL "FURRY" : APPARTENENZA E DISTINTIVITA' INTERGRUPPO NEL FURRY FANDOM

The thesis investigates the world of the Furry, the members of the furry fandom, a community that attracts young adults and develops mainly online. Some people with great interest in anthropomorphic animals, such as cartoon characters, choose to be part of the "furry fandom". Most members identify, in an almost totalizing way, with one or more species of non-human animals. The fandom was born from "funny animal" parties and science fiction conventions, adopting the name "Furry" at the end of the 80s. In this decade, it obtained its dignity and celebration at an ad hoc convention, distinguishing it from events dedicated to the world of comics and science fiction. Through websites, chat rooms and forums, the fandom reaches thousands of members and is celebrated at over 100 conventions all around the world. However, the fandom is not carefree as you can imagine, because its members are extremely marginalized and stigmatized, particularly concerning sexual aspects and pornography. The thesis, investigates the methods of identity construction by members of the furry community and identification with one's character and within the furry fandom. The discussion explores the criteria and reasons for choosing one's character, the fursona and the fursuit. The research underlines how for the Furries, belonging to the Furry Community strengthens their social identity but, at the same time, promotes their need for uniqueness and differentiation, with a deep emotional, psychological and evaluative meaning, applying the theories of Tajfel and Turner's social identity and Brewer's optimal distinctiveness to interpret the Furry world.

Il tema della tesi è il mondo Furry, i membri del furry fandom, comunità che attira giovani-adulti e si sviluppa principalmente online. Nel furry fandom si riconoscono soggetti che provano grande interesse verso gli animali antropomorfi, come i personaggi dei cartoni animati. La maggior parte dei suoi membri si identifica, in modo quasi totalizzante, con una o più specie di animali non umani. Il fandom nasce nelle feste “funny animal” e convegni di fantascienza. Prende il nome di Furry alla fine degli anni ’80, quando ottiene dignità propria ad una convention ad hoc, per distinguerlo dagli eventi dedicati al mondo dei fumetti e della fantascienza. Attraverso siti web, chat room e forum, il fandom raggiunge migliaia di membri in tutto il mondo e viene celebrato in oltre 100 convention. Il Fandom però non è spensierato quanto sembra, perché i membri di questa comunità sono estremamente marginalizzati e stigmatizzati, in particolare per gli aspetti sessuali e la pornografia. La tesi,indaga le modalità di costruzione dell’identità dei furry e l’identificazione con il proprio personaggio e nel furry fandom. Vengono approfonditi i criteri e le ragioni per la scelta del proprio personaggio, della fursona e del fursuit. La ricerca sottolinea come per i Furries, appartenere alla Comunità Furry ne rafforza l’identità sociale ma promuove, al tempo stesso, il loro bisogno di unicità e differenziazione, con un profondo significato emozionale, psicologico e valutativo, applicando le teorie dell’identità sociale di Tajfel e Turner e della distintività ottimale di Brewer per interpretare il mondo Furry.
