Canine leishmaniasis, caused by a protozoan of the genus Leishmania (order Kinetoplastida, family Trypanosomatidae), is a zoonotic infectious disease. In the countries of the Mediterranean basin, the etiological agent of this disease is Leishmania infantum (L. infantum), which has a promastigote form that is mainly carried by insects of the type Phlebotomus spp. and an amastigote form that affects various species of vertebrates. The main reservoir of L. infantum is the domestic dog while humans are only incidental hosts. The aim of this work was to carry out a detailed literature search on canine visceral leishmaniasis and to describe the cutaneous lesions that represent its most common clinical manifestations, its prevention, the drugs used and the vaccines available on the market.
