Abstract

In 1916-17, an epidemic of lethargic encephalitis broke out and spread throughout the world, taking on the characteristics of a real pandemic. Many therapies were proposed to prevent and contain the symptoms of this new disease, but above all to limit the sequelae that manifested themselves, even after years of acute attack, in the form of postencephalitic parkinsonism. However, only one therapy was successful and it spread first in Italy and then in the rest of the world: the “Bulgarian cure”, so called because it was a Bulgarian healer, named Ivan Raev, who conceived it. This cure consisted of a vinous decoction of Atropa belladonna L. roots and other medicinal plants. This work aims to provide a bibliographic study on the so-called “Bulgarian cure” for the treatment of the after-effects of lethargic encephalitis. The first chapters will be of an introductory type and will focus, first of all, on the plant used for the preparation of the “Bulgarian cure”, that is the Atropa belladonna L., whose botanical characteristics will be described, it will outline a brief historical path from the origins of the name to traditional uses, to pass to its chemical and pharmacological properties; then one will talk about the disease, in particular, anatomopathological characteristics, epidemiological and etiological aspects will be taken into consideration. Finally, in the light of past and recent literature data, on will proceed with the presentation of the central theme of the thesis, that is the therapy that has gone down in history as “Bulgarian cure”, whose origins, components, diffusion and developments will be described in an attempt to understand its success and analyse its limits.

Use of Atropa belladonna L. in the treatment of postencephalitic parkinsonism ("Bulgarian treatment")
Nel 1916-17 scoppiò un’epidemia di encefalite letargica che si diffuse in tutto il mondo, assumendo i caratteri di una vera e propria pandemia.
