Simonato Sofia The body in “Last Days” by Gus Van Sant Three-year degree course in: Disciplines of Art, Performing Arts and Music Rosamaria Salvatore My thesis is based on the analysis and criticism of the film "Last Days" by the American director Gus Van Sant, focusing on the bodily element. Among Gus Van Sant's filmography, I chose this film because I have always been fascinated by the way the director deals with themes linked to the figure of Kurt Cobain, a very complex figure who had to fight against depression and drug abuse from a very young age. I have taken this detail into consideration in order to analyse the various themes addressed by the film, by analysing sequences alternating between the interior and exterior settings of the film. Furthermore, in the various chapters of my thesis, I focus on the director's methodology of narration through his use of editing, analysing the different types of editing that cinema offers and those employed by Gus Van Sant to construct the film. To write my thesis I consulted several sources:I looked up monographs on the director in order to analyse and understand his work, various essays describing and analysing the film "Last Days", and articles from film magazines on the FIAF (International Federation of Film Archives) website, including interviews with the director or other material about him, in order to include his actual point of view on the making of the film. The research method I adopted to write the paper was to consult different materials and try to draw a line that would encapsulate all the different themes I covered in my thesis:the different chapters deal with knowledge of the director, the style he mainly adopts in his works, analyses of the different sequences that make up the film, the type of editing employed and, finally, Gus Van Sant's choice to make a film about a figure as complex as Kurt Cobain.

Simonato Sofia Il corpo in “Last Days” di Gus Van Sant Corso di Laurea Triennale in: Discipline delle Arti, della Musica e dello Spettacolo Rosamaria Salvatore La mia tesi si basa sull’analisi e critica di un’opera cinematografica del regista americano Gus Van Sant, il film “Last Days”, focalizzando sull’elemento corporale. Tra la filmografia di Gus Van Sant, ho scelto proprio questa pellicola perché mi ha sempre affascinato il modo con cui il regista tratta delle tematiche legate alla figura di Kurt Cobain, figura molto complessa che ha dovuto combattere fin da giovanissimo contro la depressione e l’abuso di sostanze stupefacenti. Ho preso in considerazione questo dettaglio per analizzare le varie tematiche che affronta il film, riportando delle analisi di sequenze che si alternano tra ambienti interni ed esterni del film. Inoltre, negli varicapitoli della mia tesi, mi soffermo sulla metodologia di narrazione da parte del regista tramite l’uso del montaggio, analizzando i diversi tipi di montaggio che il cinema offre e quelli utilizzati da Gus Van Sant per costruire l’opera. Per scrivere la mia tesi ho consultato diversi fonti: mi sono servita di monografie sul regista, per poterlo analizzare e comprendere il suo modo di operare, di diversi saggi che descrivono ed analizzano il film “Last Days”, ed infine di diversi articoli di riviste cinematografiche all’interno del sito FIAF (International Federation of Film Archives) che includono interviste fatte al regista, o altro materiale che lo riguarda, per poter includere il suo effettivo punto di vista nella realizzazione del film. Il metodo di ricerca che ho adottato per scrivere l’elaborato, è stato di consultare diversi materiali e cercare di tracciare una linea che potesse racchiudere tutte le diverse tematiche che ho trattato nella mia tesi: i diversi capitoli trattano la conoscenza del regista, lo stile che adotta maggiormente nelle sue opere, le analisi delle diverse sequenze che compongono il film, il tipo di montaggio utilizzato, ed infine la scelta da parte di Gus Van Sant di fare un film su una figura così complessa come quella di Kurt Cobain.
