The aim of the work is to extend Hess-Smith method to the analysis of ground effect for inverted airfoils, a widely exploited phenomenon in motorsport to improve race cars aerodynamics performances. To reach this goal a Matlab script was developed, which allows to define the flow velocity around an airfoil placed at a certain angle of attack and ride height and consequently to compute lift coefficient. We also want to critically analyze, through some comparisons with CFD simulations, the results provided by the script, in light of the important simplifications introduced by the method. Eventually we can use the script to carry out many simulations and to analyze how lift coefficient varies in function of angle of attack, ride height and airfoil features.

Abstract
The aim of the work is to extend Hess-Smith method to the analysis of ground effect for inverted airfoils, a widely exploited phenomenon in motorsport to improve race cars aerodynamics performances. To reach this goal a Matlab script was developed, which allows to define the flow velocity around an airfoil placed at a certain angle of attack and ride height and consequently to compute lift coefficient. We also want to critically analyze, through some comparisons with CFD simulations, the results provided by the script, in light of the important simplifications introduced by the method. Eventually we can use the script to carry out many simulations and to analyze how lift coefficient varies in function of angle of attack, ride height and airfoil features.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
