The career taken by the candidate in the world of skiing was linked to his chosen academic course and that gave birth to the idea for this thesis project. With this project, his love of skiing was combined with the passion for environmental sciences (in this case with a focus on the material wood). Wood was the first structural material for skis, and due to its special characteristics it has never been completely replaced. In this work, the history of skiing was described: from its origins up to the 21st century. It was discussed how the use of the raw material wood in ski construction has changed. The structure and composition of the modern ski was analysed in order to understand what role wood plays in the various types of skis. At the end, a questionnaire submitted to ski companies was examined, analysing which wood species are the most frequently used and the motivations for these choices. In conclusion, the most commonly used wood species were studied with the goal of understanding why a good wood can not be replaced by other materials.
