The project focuses on the geological mapping of the Thomson M crater (centered at 35.7°S, 166.0°E), located inside the lunar far side Mare Ingenii basin, with particular attention to the characterization of the surface morphology of the crater and of the area surrounding the lunar pit located at 36.0°S, 166.1°E which represents an interesting feature in terms of future exploration, since pits as on Moon surface could be an easy access to underground caves where, in the future, astronauts settlements could be developed, mainly since caves act as shielding from all the main sources of space weathering, meteoritic impacts and overall harmful radiation characteristic of an atmosphereless environment such as the Moon surface. The study was performed in the open source Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS) platform. In particular we used data coming from different space missions , such as the Clementine(Deep Space Program Science Experiment)(NASA), the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO)(NASA) and SELENE-Kaguya(JAXA). In particular, data include a 100 m/pixel LRO-Wide Angle Camera (WAC) mosaic, a 200 m/pixel Clementine UltraViolet-VISible (UVVIS) warped color ratio mosaic, a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) obtained by merging LRO-Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) and Kagura Terrain Camera data, and two LRO-Narrow Angle Camera (NAC) images, specifically the M128202846LE and M128202846RE products, with a mean ground resolution of 0.57 m/pixel. The basemaps used during this work have been trimmed from global mosaics downloaded from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Astrogeology Science Center website, whereas the high-resolution LRO-NAC products have been downloaded from the USGS Planetary Image Locator Tool (PILOT) data portal. On these basemaps we carried out the digital mapping activity distinguishing the local morphostratigraphic units and focusing on geomorphological peculiarities such as the well recognizable swirl, a peculiar feature of the Moon surface associated with regions of high magnetic field strength, and the lunar skylight.
