Tradurre il Beowulf: analisi comparativa delle opere di Tolkien e Headley.

This thesis entitled Translating Beowulf: comparative analysis of Tolkien and Headley's works” aims to analyze the translations adopted by the aforementioned authors during the translation act, through a comparative analysis proposal. The paper will take into consideration the history of Translation Studies from their inception to their development as this theory is different from the previous one, called Russian Structuralism. The characteristics, affinities and differences with Structuralism will be briefly analyzed, considering the cultural phenomenon of the Cultural Turn. Furthermore, the translation rules derived from the author Gideon Toury will be explained, also taking into consideration the concept of equivalence, sociolinguistics and an explanation on the Skopos Theory, fundamental concepts for proceeding with the comparative analysis of the two translations. Subsequently, the thesis will introduce Beowulf's work, explaining its plot and main characteristics and both the approaches of Tolkien and Headley will be analyzed, explaining similarities and differences in a comparison. Since culture is fundamental in the field of translation, the thesis will try to highlight what is Germanic culture, then focusing on the concept of wyrd both in general in the Germanic context, both in Beowulf himself, and in Headley's translation.

La presente tesi intitolata “Tradurre il Beowulf: analisi comparativa delle opere di Tolkien e Headley” si pone l’obiettivo di analizzare gli approcci di traduzione adottati dai suddetti autori durante l’atto traduttivo, attraverso una proposta di analisi comparativa. L’elaborato terrà in considerazione la storia dei Translation Studies dalla loro nascita al loro sviluppo considerando come tale teoria si distacca dalla precedente, chiamata Strutturalismo russo. Verranno analizzate brevemente le caratteristiche, le affinità e le differenze con lo Strutturalismo, considerando il fenomeno culturale del Cultural Turn. Inoltre, saranno esplicitate le norme traduttive introdotte dall’autore Gideon Toury, tenendo anche in considerazione il concetto di equivalenza, di sociolinguistica e una spiegazione sulla Skopos Theory, concetti fondamentali per procedere all’analisi comparativa delle due traduzioni. Successivamente, il lavoro di tesi introdurrà l’opera del Beowulf, esplicitandone la trama e le caratteristiche principali e verranno analizzati entrambi gli approcci di Tolkien e Headley esplicitandone analogie e differenze in una comparazione. Essendo la cultura fondamentale in ambito traduttologico, la tesi cercherà di mettere in luce quella che è la cultura germanica, focalizzandosi poi sul concetto di wyrd sia in generale nell’ambito germanico, sia nel Beowulf stesso, sia nella traduzione di Headley.
