The Marvels of the East: un'analisi del rapporto tra testo e immagini

The subject of this paper concerns the analysis of the relationship between text and images in The Marvels of the East. The work was found into three different manuscripts, the Cotton Vitellius A. XV, the Cotton Tiberius B. V and the Bodley 614. The aim of this research is to analyze in which way images’ position on the sheet, and their relationship with linguistical text and manuscript, can influence the literary genre of The Marvels, its perception among the medieval readers, and the critical study of codices. The purpose will be achieved through a constant comparison between the three manuscripts, drawing portions of the text from the modern English, comparing them to the illustrations accompanying them in the codices. The first chapter will be related to the study of the manuscripts, and particularly on the analysis of their peculiarities. A first glance to the verbal text, and another one to the images will lead to an initial literary definition of the work. Lastly, thanks to a deeper study of the relation between images and codices will be investigated its influence on the critical study of The Marvels’ manuscripts. The second chapter will regard the definition of the various literary connotation attached to this work, beginning from the examination of examples taken from The Marvels. The third chapter, finally, concerns the role that text and images would eventually have into a hypothetical critical edition of the work. In addition, it is related to the legitimacy of critics’ alteration of images and their position. In conclusion, the relationship between text and illustrations is necessary to the correct and complete comprehension of The Marvels.

L’argomento del presente elaborato si incentra su un’analisi del rapporto tra testo e immagini all’interno dell’opera letteraria The Marvles of the East. Essa è stata ritrovata nei manoscritti Cotton Vitellius A. XV, Cotton Tiberius B. V e Bodley 614. L’obiettivo di questa ricerca sarà di stabilire in che modo le immagini, la loro posizione all’interno della pagina, la loro relazione con testo linguistico e manoscritto influenzino fattori quali il genere letterario dell’opera, la percezione da parte del lettore, i significati insiti, lo studio critico dei manoscritti, e la ricostruzione della storia di questi ultimi. Al fine di raggiungere lo scopo del presente elaborato, nel corso dello stesso si elaborerà un continuo confronto fra i manoscritti, traendo in esempio porzioni di testo dalla versione di The Marvels in inglese moderno, accostandole alle illustrazioni cui si accompagnano nei tre manoscritti. Il primo capitolo si concentrerà su uno studio dei manoscritti. In particolar modo si analizzeranno le peculiarità di ognuno di essi, si getterà un primo sguardo al testo ed uno alle immagini nel tentativo di un’iniziale inquadratura letteraria dell’opera. Infine, attraverso un’attenta esaminazione delle illustrazioni sarà possibile individuare gli elementi relativi alle immagini che influenzano lo studio critico dei codici e le controversie ad esso connesse. Il secondo capitolo, invece, si incentrerà sulla definizione delle varie connotazioni letterarie associabili a The Marvels, partendo proprio dallo studio di esempi di testi e immagini tratti dall’opera. Il terzo capitolo, infine, si incentrerà sul ruolo che testo e immagini eventualmente ricoprirebbero all’interno di un’ipotetica edizione critica dell’opera, e quanto i critici sarebbero autorizzati ad un eventuale intervento nei confronti delle immagini e della loro posizione. La conclusione a cui si è giunti, poi, è che il rapporto che lega testo linguistico e figurativo sia indissolubile e necessario al fine di una corretta e completa comprensione di The Marvels.
