Hericium erinaceus is an edible mushroom found widely in Europe, Asia and North America in which numerous bioactive molecules are present, most notably erinacins, ericenones, adenosine, herierin III and herierin IV. These molecules appear to have neuroprotective abilities as they have been seen to promote neurogenesis, reduce oxidative stress, restore the level of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin, and reduce inflammation. All this can be attributed to this mushroom's ability to decrease the symptoms of major depressive disorder.

Abstract

Hericium erinaceus is an edible mushroom found widely in Europe, Asia and North America in which numerous bioactive molecules are present, most notably erinacins, ericenones, adenosine, herierin III and herierin IV. These molecules appear to have neuroprotective abilities as they have been seen to promote neurogenesis, reduce oxidative stress, restore the level of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin, and reduce inflammation. All this can be attributed to this mushroom's ability to decrease the symptoms of major depressive disorder.
