My thesis project consisted in using atmospheric plasma for the degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), one of the most persistent pollutants in the water resources of our area. Specifically, this study, focuses on its mineralization quantified through the CO2 released during the process. Before proceeding with the experiments, it was important to develop the method of analysis in order to quantify the molecule. To this aim, we used a gas chromatograph equipped with a TCD and, once its sensitivity was defined, an effective gas sampling method was developed. The setup and the experimental procedures were thus defined, it was possible to proceed with the calibration of the instrument and then move on to the experiments. They were performed using a radial discharge plasma reactor, designed and built in the laboratory where this thesis was carried out. Solutions of PFOA 1·10-4 M in milliQ water were treated for variable times. It was then possible to proceed with the analysis of the gas samples that resulted in the mineralization percentages of 36.50%, 58,73% and 67,42% after treatment times of 30, 60 and 90 minutes, respectively.
Il mio progetto di tesi è consistito nell’utilizzo di plasma atmosferico per la degradazione di un inquinante persistente, l’acido perfluoroottanoico (PFOA), uno dei composti perfluoroalchilici (PFAS) più diffusi nelle acque delle nostre zone. Nello specifico, questo studio, si concentra sulla determinazione della percentuale di mineralizzazione del PFOA, quantificata attraverso la misura della CO2 liberata durante il processo stesso. Prima di procedere con gli esperimenti, è stato importante mettere a punto il metodo di analisi per poter quantificare la molecola. Per farlo ci siamo affidati a un gas cromatografo, munito di rivelatore a conducibilità termica (TCD). Una volta definita la sua sensibilità, è stato possibile mettere a punto un metodo di campionamento efficace del gas. Sono stati dunque definiti setup e procedure sperimentali e si è potuto procedere con la calibrazione dello strumento per poi passare all’esecuzione degli esperimenti. Per questi ultimi è stata impiegato un reattore a scarica radiale, progettato e realizzato nel laboratorio dove è stata svolta la tesi, con il quale si trattavano, per un tempo variabile, le soluzioni di PFOA in acqua milliQ di concentrazione 1·10-4 M. Fatto ciò, si è potuto quindi passare alle analisi dei campioni gassosi, attraverso le quali sono state definite le percentuali di mineralizzazione pari a 36,50%, 58,73% e 67,42% rispettivamente dopo 30, 60 e 90 minuti di trattamento.
