The purpose of the dissertation is to deepen one aspect of the multifaceted topic of sustainable investments, that is the one of sustainability ratings. The thesis articulates as following: in the first chapter will be outlined the general features of ESG ratings and of rating providers and, then, the creation process will be illustrated. In the second section, we will analyze the weaknesses of such instruments starting from the biases that concern the rating methodologies and concluding with an excursus about the problem of the weak correlation of sustainability judgments and the consequences of such problem on the use and the reliability the ratings themselves. Finally, in the third chapter, in order to connect the topic described above to a current topic, we will analyze the role of ESG ratings and other financial instruments within the field of low-carbon transition. Therefore, the possible transition scenarios and the risks connected to them will be described and then will be examined the role of the ESG ratings in ensuring a gradual and orderly transition to a low carbon economy.
