Il parametro "Expected Goals" e la sua applicazione nei modelli FC Midtjylland e Brentford FC.

The "Expected Goals" statistical parameter represents the measure of the probability that a given shot turns into a goal, and is a qualitative datum based on the characteristics of the shot itself or on the events resulting from it, conditioned by factors such as the position of the shooter, the part of the body used to kick and the type of assist received, as well as the type of attack and the moment of the match in which it was played. The xG value is used in football, both at the professional and amateur level, to assess the ability or luck that a player has in concluding towards the opponent’s goal, in terms of talent selection, or to analyze the potential performance and effectiveness in different situations of individual players and the entire team, in order to manage them profitably on and off the pitch. Through this thesis we will demonstrate how it is possible to apply effectively and fruitfully statistics to the world of sport and in particular to football, analyzing especially how two militant teams in the Danish and English top professional division, Football Club Midtjylland and Brentford Football Club, have taken advantage of the parameter "Expected Goals" in the management and growth of their club.

Il parametro statistico “Expected Goals” (o "gol previsti") rappresenta la misura della probabilità che un determinato tiro si tramuti in un goal, ed è un dato qualitativo basato sulle caratteristiche del tiro stesso o sugli eventi da esso scaturiti, condizionato da fattori come la posizione del tiratore, la parte di corpo utilizzata per calciare e il tipo di assist ricevuto, oltre che la tipologia di attacco e il momento della partita in cui si è svolto. Il valore xG viene utilizzato in ambito calcistico, sia a livello professionistico che dilettantistico, per valutare la capacità o la fortuna che un giocatore ha nel concludere verso la porta avversaria, in termini di selezione del talento, o per analizzare le potenziali prestazioni e l’efficacia in differenti situazioni dei singoli calciatori e della intera squadra, al fine di una loro proficua gestione dentro e fuori il campo di gioco. Mediante questa tesi andremo a dimostrare come sia possibile applicare in maniera efficace e fruttuosa la statistica al mondo dello sport e in particolar modo al calcio, analizzando specificatamente come due squadre militanti nella massima divisione professionistica danese ed inglese, il Football Club Midtjylland e il Brentford Football Club, abbiano sfruttato il parametro “Expected Goals” nella gestione e crescita del proprio club.
