Over the past twenty years there has been a rapid proliferation of a new class of digital social platforms. Many people connect to these platforms from whenever and wherever. They are called Social Network Sites (SNS) or Social Media (SM). They allow the carrying out of a wide variety of activities, including the sharing of photographs and videos that portray the body image of the user. Several studies have shown that there is a relationship between involvement in photo-based behaviors on SM (e.g., photo investment and photo manipulation) and negative body image. The latter can be defined as a mental representation characterized by negative feelings, thoughts, cognitions, behaviors and perceptions that an individual has against his/her body. It manifests itself mainly through body dissatisfaction, which is a risk factor for the onset and maintenance of different dysfunctional behaviors and psychological disorders, including eating disorders and body dysmorphic disorder, in men, but especially in women. More recently, in addition to negative body image, researchers have begun to investigate the construct of positive body image. It is an holistic and multidimensional construct: not simply the opposite of the negative one, but a construct in itself, characterized by various components. The positive body image has proved to be a protective element for the individual's well-being. This study investigates the relationship between photo-based behaviors and some psychological dimensions related to negative body image. It also explores how positive body image can moderate this relationship, in females and in males. Through these, it is possible to expand the results of other studies and evaluate the possible protective role of positive body image in this relationship.
Negli ultimi venti anni si è assistito a una rapida proliferazione di una nuova classe di piattaforme sociali digitali a cui milioni di persone si connettono da tutto il mondo in ogni momento, definite Social Network Site (SNS) o Social Media (SM). Esse consentono lo svolgimento di un’ampia varietà di attività, tra cui la condivisione di fotografie e video che ritraggono l’aspetto fisico dell’utente. Diversi studi hanno dimostrato che esiste una relazione tra il coinvolgimento nei photo-based behaviour svolti sui SM (e.g., photo investment e photo manipulation) e l’immagine corporea negativa. Quest'ultima è definibile come una rappresentazione mentale caratterizzata da sentimenti, pensieri, cognizioni, comportamenti e percezioni negativi che un individuo sperimenta in riferimento al proprio corpo. Essa si manifesta principalmente attraverso l’insoddisfazione corporea, che a sua volta costituisce un fattore di rischio per l’esordio e il mantenimento di numerosi comportamenti disfunzionali e diversi disturbi psicologici, tra cui i disturbi dell’alimentazione e il disturbo di dismorfismo corporeo, negli uomini, ma soprattutto nelle donne. Più recentemente, oltre all’immagine corporea negativa, gli studiosi hanno cominciato ad approfondire il costrutto di immagine corporea positiva. Essa viene definita come un costrutto olistico e multidimensionale: non viene semplicemente intesa come l’opposto di quella negativa, ma come un costrutto a sé, caratterizzato da diverse componenti interdipendenti. L’immagine corporea positiva si è rivelata un elemento protettivo per il benessere dell’individuo ed è emersa la necessità di definire come poterla promuovere. Gli obiettivi del presente studio consistono nell’indagare la relazione tra i photo-based behavior e alcune dimensioni psicologiche legate all’immagine corporea negativa e nell’esplorare in che modo l’immagine corporea positiva possa moderare tale relazione, sia nelle femmine che nei maschi. Attraverso questi obiettivi è possibile ampliare i risultati di altri studi e valutare il possibile ruolo protettivo dell’immagine corporea positiva all’interno di questa relazione.
