The translations of Petrarch's sonnets in early modern England

The aim of this thesis is to analyse some translations of Petrarch's sonnets composed by Sir Thomas Wyatt and Henry Howard, earl of Surrey in the first half of the sixteenth century. These texts are framed in the historical, social and cultural context of early modern England, focusing on the phenomenon of translation and the presence of Italians in England. Additionally, I will investigate the influence of Petrarch's vernacular work in Italy and then in England, and also the sonnet's structure and themes, comparing the Petrarchan model to the English one. After a first analysis of a translation written by Wyatt and one written by Surrey of two different sonnets, I will compare two versions of the same sonnets in order to show differences and similarities.

L'obiettivo di questa tesi è analizzare le traduzioni di alcuni sonetti di Petrarca composte nella prima metà del '500 dai poeti inglesi Sir Thomas Wyatt e Henry Howard, earl of Surrey. Questi testi vengono inseriti nel contesto storico, sociale e culturale della prima modernità inglese con uno sguardo sul fenomeno della traduzione e la presenza degli italiani in Inghilterra. Inoltre viene contestualizzata l'influenza e la diffusione dei testi di Petrarca, in particolare quelli scritti in volgare, nella penisola italiana e successivamente in Inghilterra. Viene analizzata successivamente la forma del sonetto petrarchesco, messa in confronto con quella del sonetto inglese. Infine, dopo aver messo a confronto una traduzione scritta da Wyatt e una da Surrey con i rispettivi testi di origine, vengono confrontate due versioni dei due poeti tratte dal medesimo sonetto di Petrarca.
