Risolvere l'enigma dei realia: tradurre articoli informativi sulla questione linguistica fiamminga per un pubblico non esperto

The Flemish language issue is little known and underexplored outside of Belgium; translating informative articles from Dutch into Italian which discuss this topic can help readers abroad know more about it. This thesis focuses on the process of translating this subject matter for an Italian-speaking non-expert audience and presents translation solutions to realia: cultural-specific items related to a source language and/or culture that are especially difficult to translate in a target language. In order to understand the Flemish language issue, this work introduces first of all the history and evolution of the Dutch language in Flanders, specifically: rights, standardization process, and the variety known as tussentaal. This part is followed by an introduction to the notion of realia and the respective translation strategies according to the Dutch linguist D. Grit, which have also been applied in the translation into Italian of the realia found in the two informative texts taken in consideration: a newspaper article on the teaching of Dutch in Wallonia and a blog article on the use of tussentaal, both of which can be found in the appendix along with their respective translations.

La questione linguistica fiamminga è un argomento poco conosciuto e approfondito al di fuori del Belgio; la traduzione di articoli informativi dal neerlandese all’italiano che trattano la questione può essere utile per diffonderne la conoscenza. Questa tesi affronta il processo di traduzione di tale tematica verso un pubblico non esperto di lingua italiana e propone soluzioni traduttive ai realia: termini culturali specifici di una lingua e/o cultura di partenza particolarmente difficili da rendere in una lingua d’arrivo. Per comprendere la questione linguistica fiamminga, la tesi introduce innanzitutto la storia e l’evoluzione della lingua neerlandese nelle Fiandre, nello specifico: i diritti, la standardizzazione e la variante definita tussentaal. Segue un’introduzione al concetto dei realia e alle strategie per tradurli secondo il linguista olandese Grit, le quali sono state adottate anche per la traduzione in italiano dei realia presenti nei due testi informativi presi in esame: un articolo di giornale sull’insegnamento del neerlandese in Vallonia e un articolo di blog sull’uso della tussentaal, entrambi riportati nell’appendice assieme alle rispettive traduzioni.
