"L'intraducibilità delle emozioni: la saudade"

Every language has unique words to describe traditions, emotions and ways of living that are difficult to transport or translate into other languages or cultures. Translation Studies are evolving in a direction that is increasingly attentive to cultural variability, this thesis fits into this context by investigating the translation approach to emotions, elements of great social value and strongly characterised by the culture to which they belong. The impossibility of translating culturally-specific emotions is investigated through an in-depth study of two main elements: translation and emotions. The Portuguese word "saudade", known for its untranslatability, subsequently supports the thesis that some emotions are shaped by culture and history, and therefore cannot be translated into other languages.

Ogni lingua ha parole uniche per descrivere tradizioni, emozioni e modi di vivere che difficilmente possono essere trasportati o tradotti in altre lingue o culture. I Translation Studies si stanno evolvendo in una direzione sempre più attenta alla variabilità culturale, questa tesi si inserisce in questo contesto indagando l'approccio della traduzione alle emozioni, elementi dal grande valore sociale e fortemente caratterizzati dalla cultura d'appartenenza. L'impossibilità di tradurre le emozioni culturospecifiche, è indagata tramite uno studio approfondito di due elementi principali: la traduzione e le emozioni. La parola portoghese "saudade", nota per la sua intraducibilità si presta successivamente ad avvalorare la tesi che alcune emozioni siano plasmate dalla cultura e dalla storia, e che per questo non possano essere tradotte in altre lingue.
