This paper explores the possible role of Artificial Intelligence in the context of art and artistic creation. Engaging with this question, firstly my essay will try to define the concepts of creativity and autonomy, referring, among others, to Margaret Boden research. Secondly, it will focus on Sigmund Freud essay “Das Unheimliche” and it will analyze the questions raising from the renewed interest for the concept of “Unheimlich” in the current AI and AI art debate. This concept and its possible connection with Robotics and AI was firstly underlined by Masahiro Mori (M. Mori, The uncanny valley, 2014) and recently it drew attention of AI experts and scientific community. In the third place I will refer to traditional AI debate making references to Alan Turing and John Searle works. My hypothesis engages with Searle’s “Chinese room” argument, challenging semantic – syntax argument. Following this, I will refer to Arthur Danto and his important work about contemporary and conceptual art, especially referring to his essays “Artworld & Artwork”, “After the End of Art”, and “The Abuse of Beauty”. In conclusion my essay will propose an art theory which takes in account different moments and parts of artistic creation and it suggests to consider them as strongly connected, being different parts of an inextricable and unsolvable unit.

Abstract

This paper explores the possible role of Artificial Intelligence in the context of art and artistic creation. Engaging with this question, firstly my essay will try to define the concepts of creativity and autonomy, referring, among others, to Margaret Boden research. Secondly, it will focus on Sigmund Freud essay “Das Unheimliche” and it will analyze the questions raising from the renewed interest for the concept of “Unheimlich” in the current AI and AI art debate.
