Fact-checking e debunking nell’era del digitale: argomentare efficacemente contro la disinformazione. Caso Covid-19.

In recent years, as fake and unverified news has been rampant online, attempts have been made to define defensive strategies. This thesis will address the issue of fake news and misinformation, which pervade our digital age more consistently and rapidly than in the past, and will then illustrate the main techniques adopted by debunkers and fact-checkers to deal with this issue. The main solutions adopted to combat the phenomenon of fake news will be presented, and it will be reasoned that these techniques prove useful to those who are genuinely willing to help themselves and unearth the bogus information in circulation; but what to do, on the other hand, for those who are equally unwilling to cooperate in the dissemination of reliable information and are locked in their own polarised echo chamber? The dynamics that arise when interacting with (more or less reliable) information, the risks that debunking may entail when dealing with already polarised subjects, and the digital argumentation suitable for communicating with those who are locked in their own information bubble, so as to be able to bring them back to the path of truth, will then be addressed.

Negli ultimi anni, con il dilagare di notizie false e non verificate online, si è provato a definire delle strategie difensive. In questa tesi si affronterà la tematica delle fake news e della disinformazione che pervadono la nostra epoca digitale in maniera più consistente e rapida rispetto al passato, verranno poi illustrate le principali tecniche adottate da debunkers e fact-checkers per far fronte a questa problematica. Presentate le principali soluzioni adottate per combattere il fenomeno delle fake news, si ragionerà sul fatto che tali tecniche si rivelano utili verso chi si dimostra realmente intenzionato a farsi aiutare e a scovare le informazioni fasulle in circolazione; ma cosa fare, invece, per coloro che non sono ugualmente disposti a collaborare per una diffusione di informazioni attendibili e sono rinchiusi nella loro echo chamber polarizzata? Verranno quindi affrontate le dinamiche che si creano quando si interagisce con le informazioni (più o meno attendibili), i rischi che il debunking può comportare quando si ha a che fare con soggetti già polarizzati e l’argomentazione digitale adatta a comunicare con chi è rinchiuso nella propria bolla informativa, in modo da poterli riportare sulla via della verità.
