L'exil de Dante vu par les romantiques français

We find in French Romanticism and in some authors reminiscences and references to the writings of the Italian author Dante Alighieri. One can easily allude to the revival of the myth of the poet hero, to the love drama of Paolo and Francesca or to the stylistic modernity of the Commedia. The research work that will lead to the writing of the master’s thesis will focus on a specific theme : the aspect of exile, lived and suffered, or perceived as poetic inspiration. The originality of the thesis will be to answer the following problem : to what extent does the notion of exile resonate in French romantic literature, as in the work of the poet Dante Alighieri? The historical and literary figure of the Italian poet Dante Alighieri embodies the ideal of the exiled poet far from his homeland, Florence. Many centuries separate the Middle Ages from Romanticism, yet this notion of exile is repeated over time. Several poets and writers have faced the experience of exile, portraying their condition and their attachment to their country. In France, it is sufficient to quote two examples known as Chateaubriand or Victor Hugo. Can we rightly ask ourselves to what extent French romanticism requires reminiscences of Dante Alighieri? First, we will try to identify the romantic codes related to a certain romantic poetics of exile, and more particularly to focus on a vision of the myth of Dante exiled. In a second phase, we will refer in particular to the writing of three major authors of Romanticism : Byron, Lamartine and Hugo. Their overall dynamics that link founding romantic texts on the theme of Dante’s exile will be studied. We will focus in the following on the rewritings and adaptations of the Divina Comedia and their direct relationship with the Dante and otherworldly exile : La Chute d'un ange by Lamartine and La Divine Epopée by Soumet. Finally, this itinerary of study will lead us to discover the reinterpretation of Dante’s myth made during the Romanticism through the study of the text Les Proscrits by Balzac and the play Dante et Béatrix written by Bornier. The parallels that will be created between the different literary eras and the different authors will allow to explain interesting dynamics in the evolution of the themes. The inspirations of romantic writers will bring to light biographical and literary paths that sometimes meet or can diverge. The main interest of the thesis lies in the study of the similarities from which an important trend will emerge, while taking into account the particular and original aspects of each author studied and each work in detail. The conclusion may in fact determine whether the notion of romantic exile echoes with that initially conceived by Dante Alighieri.

Troviamo nel romanticismo francese e in numerosi autori reminiscenze e riferimenti agli scritti dell’autore italiano Dante Alighieri. Si possono facilmente trovare allusioni alla rinascita del mito dell'eroe poeta, al dramma d'amore di Paolo e Francesca o alla modernità stilistica della Commedia. Il lavoro di ricerca alla base di questa tesi di laurea magistrale si concentra su un tema specifico : l'aspetto dell'esilio, vissuto e sofferto, o percepito come ispirazione poetica. L’obiettivo è quello di rispondere alla domanda : fino a che punto la nozione di esilio risuona nella letteratura romantica francese, come nell'opera del poeta Dante Alighieri? La figura storica e letteraria del poeta italiano Dante Alighieri incarna l'ideale del poeta esiliato lontano dalla sua patria, Firenze. Molti secoli separano il Medioevo dal Romanticismo, eppure questo specifico esilio si ripete nel tempo divenendo paradigmatico. Diversi poeti e scrittori hanno affrontato a loro volta l'esperienza dell’esilio, ritraendo la loro condizione e il loro attaccamento al loro paese. In Francia, è sufficiente citare due esempi noti come Lamartine o Victor Hugo. La questione è perché il romanticismo francese abbondi in reminiscenze di Dante Alighieri. In primo luogo, si è cercato di identificare i codici romantici relativi a una certa poetica romantica dell'esilio, e più particolarmente di interoggarci su una visione specifica del mito dantesco esiliato. Ci si riferisce in particolare a tre dei maggiori autori del Romanticismo : Byron, Lamartine e Hugo. Viene studiato il loro rapporto complessivo e le dinamiche che legano tra loro testi fondatori sulla tematica dell’esilio di Dante. In una seconda fase, viene approfondito il legame fra Victor Hugo e Dante Alighieri, nelle poesie e nei saggi dell’autore francese che riguardano appunto l’esilio. Ci si concentra in seguito su un’altra visione proposta da un’autrice esiliata : Madame de Staël, che ricorre alla figura dantesca per elaborare metafore su questa tematica. Infine, si giunge alla scoperta della reinterpretazione del mito dantesco in Les Proscrits di Balzac e nella pièce teatrale Dante et Béatrix scritta da Bornier. I paralleli che si creano tra le diverse epoche letterarie e i diversi autori permettono di spiegare interessanti dinamiche nell'evoluzione dei temi affrontati. Le ispirazioni degli scrittori romantici portano alla luce percorsi biografici e letterari che a volte si incontrano o che possono divergere. L'interesse principale della tesi risiede nello studio delle somiglianze da cui emerge una tendenza evidente, pur senza dimenticare gli aspetti particolari e originali di ogni autore e di ogni opera presa in analisi. Attraverso le ipotesi e i studi degli specialisti della presenza di Dante in Francia nel romanticismo : Pitwood, Araujo-Rousset ; e di ricercatori su Dante in particolare : Ferrara, Carlyle, si giunge infine a stabilire se la nozione di esilio romantico riecheggia effettivamente quella inizialmente concepita da Dante Alighieri e quale sia la dimensione dell’esilio nelle opere romantiche.
