For language teachers it is extremely important to make students acquainted with authentic spoken language content and to keep their motivation and engagement high in the classroom. This thesis examines Stephen Chbosky's novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and discusses why it could represent a valuable resource which might help create meaningful and engaging lessons. The novel was chosen not only for its unique story to which students might relate, but also because it allows teachers to bring this long-sought authenticity to language classrooms.
