Since 2013, a new social movement linked to the pro-life and anti-gender question has entered the Italian political arena and has strengthened itself, especially after the rejection of the Zan bill on October 2021. Making use of the Vatican rhetoric of the “theory of Gender” and of an intense lobbying strategy, this Neo-Catholic movement, as it has been defined by scholars, has gained the access to institutional politics, through to the creation of a profitable connection with right-wing populist parties, such as the Lega (League) and Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy). The aim of this research is to analyze the origins, main characteristics and consequences of this connection, starting from the examination of a specific case study: the existing link between Pro Vita & Famiglia (Pro Life & Family), the main association that is active inside the movement, and the Lega, that is a clear example of a right-wing populist party. In particular, the object of this analysis will be the structural factors underlying and making successful this political alliance, that must be considered not as a unilateral exploitation but as an exchange bringing benefits and burdens to both sides. The hypothesis formulated in this research regards the solidity of this alliance that, being built on political and rhetorical strategies, might consolidate, generating negative effects for the Italian democratic system.

Abstract
The hypothesis formulated in this research regards the solidity of this alliance that, being built on political and rhetorical strategies, might consolidate, generating negative effects for the Italian democratic system.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
