Aesthetic medicine is an emerging branch of medicine based on minimally invasive procedures and techniques ( such as dermal fillers, botox injections, collagen, hyaluronic acid, etc.) which aim to improve imperfections of the face and the body and refine the appearance and texture of the skin. Over the last few years, the requests for medical and surgical procedures for aesthetic purposes have been incrementing, suggesting an increased attention and care for one's physical appearance but also a possible greater diffusion of an experience of body dissatisfaction. Although initially this phenomenon seemed purely feminine, lately, it has been found to be present in men as well. It should be emphasized, however, that despite the fact that most of the present high percentages of dissatisfaction about one’s own body and physical appearance, this does not reach the significant clinical level of distress and compromised functionality typical of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). Because of the shame and embarrassment experienced, most individuals with BDD seek more frequently aesthetic medicine treatments and cosmetic plastic surgery, in an effort to reduce or eliminate the dissatisfaction with their physical appearance, not seeking help from mental health professionals. The purpose of this research is to understand what leads people to resort to seeking the procedures and cosmetic medicine treatments, discriminating between those who start from a good self-acceptance and those who present various levels of body dissatisfaction until they meet the criteria for the diagnosis of BDD.

Abstract
The purpose of this research is to understand what leads people to resort to seeking the procedures and cosmetic medicine treatments, discriminating between those who start from a good self-acceptance and those who present various levels of body dissatisfaction until they meet the criteria for the diagnosis of BDD.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
