Background: The complexity of treating schizophrenia requires the integration of different treatments. In addition to antipsychotic therapies, it requires interventions to improve social skills, therapeutic adherence and the integration of psychoeducational programs for patients and families. Purpose of the study: The main aim of this review is the identification of nursing educational strategies which are applicable in a territorial care context, to improve the quality of life of the patients suffering from schizophrenia and that of their families/caregivers. Materials and methods: The main source consulted for the review is the specific database for scientific literature called PubMed. Results: The selected studies revealed significant improvements in patients who have benefited from educational programs aimed at increasing therapeutic adherence through awareness, motivational interviews and in-depth study of issues, such as the benefits and side effects of drug treatments. Furthermore, it appears that educational interventions for family members/caregivers represent an effective intervention for the reduction of their level of burden. Conclusions: The results of this review reinforce the initial hypothesis according to which by integrating standard care with a psychoeducation program, a regression of psychotic symptoms can be found in the adult patients with schizophrenia, reducing and preventing the risk of relapses and improving their quality of life and that of their families. Keywords: Schizophrenia, schizophrenic psychosis, psychoeducational interventions, psychoeducation, therapeutic adherence, quality of life.
