The purpose of this work is to adress a delicate and frightening issue, such as death, from a purley sientific point of view, focusing in particular on the dynamics that affect the brain, and neurons, in this phase. After a brief overview on how to define and diagnose death, and how the criteria for verifying it have changed over time, we will move on to a summary of the studies on the subject, analyzing experiments performed on animal models and information obtained from the study of human clinical cases. According to the results, what appears to be happening is that the brain continues to function after cardiac death has occurred, and the neurons remain active for several minutes after death, producing particularly high brain wave spikes and triggering a widespread depolarization, due to the lack of oxygen, which would the cellular necrosis. These discoveries could bring new awareness in the scientific world, giving logical meanings also to near-death experiences, and restoring a certain immanence to the concept of soul and resurrection.
