Background: Many European and American studies have shown a significant increase during the Covid 19 pandemic of subjects with Eating and Nutrition Disorders, and Anorexia Nervosa (AN) in particular, with an increased need for hospitalisation. The subjects evaluated present more severe psychic pictures, but little is known about the organic characteristics of these patients. Aim of the study: to assess the presence of clinical, nutritional and biohumoral differences between subjects referred to the AOPD DCA Centre before and after the spread of the Covid 19 pandemic. Materials and methods: all patients (N=261) with newly diagnosed AN aged ≥ 14 years evaluated at the Regional Centre for DCA in Padua or admitted to the Hospital of Padua for DNA in 2021 (N=117) and in 2010-2012 (N=144) were included in the Study. Clinical characteristics (age, age at menarche, duration of disease, restrictive vs bulimic-purgative subtype, duration of amenorrhoea, weight at onset of amenorrhoea, premorbid weight, maximum and minimum weight reached, mode of presentation), vital and anthropometric parameters (BMI, blood pressure, heart rate) and biohumoral parameters (blood count, renal, liver and thyroid function indexes, electrolytes and fasting blood glucose) were recorded in all patients. Statistical analysis was performed with IBM SPSS Statisticsvers 25 software. Results: The 2021 cohort, comparable in number to the population evaluated in the three years 2010-2012, had a significantly lower mean age and a higher number of hospitalizations at the admission to the AOPD. There were statistically significant differences from the 2010-2012 cohort in systolic and diastolic blood pressure (higher) and haemoglobin and haematocrit (higher), but no statistically significant differences have been found in the remaining anthropometric, clinical and biohumoral parameters assessed. Conclusions: Our data suggest that in the post-pandemic phase there was an increase in the number and severity of subjects treated for AN, but increased need for hospital treatment is attributable to a worsening of psychiatric symptoms rather than to a worsening of the organic condition of the subjects assessed.
