Exploring Challenges in Translation in the Harry Potter Book Series

Since the first book was published in 1997, the “Harry Potter” saga, written by J.K. Rowling, has been a global success. Nowadays, the seven-book saga has been translated into over eighty languages worldwide. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the difficulties encountered in translating “Harry Potter” into various languages. After attempting to give a definition to children's literature, the challenges in translating children's literature are explored. An analysis of the language used in the saga is also carried out, paying particular attention to neologisms. Subsequently, the choices made by the translators who have worked on the translations of the saga are compared, highlighting differences and similarities. A study on the challenges in translating the 'Harry Potter' book series is conducted, focusing on the translation of character names, locations and the houses of Hogwarts school. Finally, taking into consideration the second book of the saga "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets", the original version written in British English and the version written in American English are compared. Also taking the second chapter of the saga into consideration, the differences between the first and second editions of the Italian translation are highlighted and the reasons why it was decided to retranslate the books from a different perspective are explored.

Fin dalla pubblicazione del primo libro nel 1997, la saga di “Harry Potter”, scritta da J.K. Rowling, ha riscosso un successo globale. Ad oggi, i sette libri che compongono la saga sono stati tradotti in oltre ottanta lingue in tutto il mondo. Questa tesina ha lo scopo di esplorare le difficoltà riscontrate nella traduzione di “Harry Potter” nelle varie lingue. Dopo aver cercato di dare una definizione alla letteratura per bambini, si esplorano le difficoltà nel tradurre la letteratura per bambini. Viene inoltre eseguita un’analisi del linguaggio utilizzato nella saga, ponendo particolare attenzione ai neologismi. Successivamente, si mettono a confronto le scelte fatte dai traduttori che hanno lavorato alle traduzioni della saga, evidenziandone le differenze e le similitudini. In particolar modo ci si concentra sulla traduzione dei nomi dei personaggi, dei luoghi e delle case della scuola di Hogwarts. Infine, prendendo in considerazione il secondo libro della saga “Harry Potter e la Camera dei Segreti”, vengono comparate la versione originale scritta in inglese britannico e la versione scritta in inglese americano. Sempre prendendo in considerazione il secondo capitolo della saga, vengono evidenziate le differenze tra la prima e la seconda edizione della traduzione italiana e vengono esplorati i motivi per i quali si è scelto di tradurre nuovamente i libri in un’ottica diversa.
