Humor in audiovisual translation: Subtitling the 86th Oscars and the 2020 Golden Globes opening monologues.

This dissertation consists of three chapters. The main aim is to propose an analysis of humor within audiovisual translation from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Some of the most relevant aspects will be addressed, such as: the definition of humor, its peculiarities, problems and issues still debated, theories formulated by scholars, and its translation strategies in the audiovisual field. Prior to this analysis, introduction on audiovisual translation is provided that allows for a greater understanding of its relationship with the academic area of translation studies, its definition, its coining of the term and its modalities, and then a more in-depth research on subtitling. This will also be complemented by an analysis from a cultural point of view, showing how much the element of culture affects language and translation. This theoretical part will be followed by practical work consisting of translating the humorous parts (from English into Italian) of the opening monologues of the 2020 Golden Globes and the 86th Oscars, respectively presented by Ricky Gervais and Ellen DeGeneres. More specifically, this translation will be a subtitling proposal and it will be accompanied by a brief introduction on the genre of the opening monologue, by a comparison of the two comedians’ humor, an explanation of the strategies adopted for this translation (with reference to the first two chapters) and some considerations from a cultural point of view.
