Young Black Activism in "The Hate U Give": an analysis

Lo scopo di questa tesi è quello di fare luce sul movimento Black Lives Matter e di analizzare “The Hate U Give”, il romanzo bestseller scritto da Angie Thomas nel 2017, il quale racconta la storia di Starr Carter, una sedicenne afroamericana che assiste alla morte del suo amico d’infanzia per mano di un poliziotto bianco, il quale verrà assolto dalle accuse. In particolare, si vuole sottolineare la vicinanza del romanzo al movimento, sia per quanto riguarda i temi trattati (per esempio violenza della polizia sulla comunità afroamericana, la profilazione razziale), sia per la figura della protagonista stessa, la quale incarna il prototipo di giovane attivista che vuole far sentire la sua voce, come è successo alle tre donne fondatrici del movimento. Viene inoltre evidenziato come la scelta da parte dell’autrice del genere “Young Adult” (letteratura giovanile) risulti ottimale per diffondere il messaggio tra i più giovani, fornendogli un punto di riferimento che auspicabilmente li ispiri a fare lo stesso nella loro vita di tutti i giorni.

The main purpose of this thesis is to shed light on the Black Lives Matter movement and to analyze The Hate U Give, the bestselling novel written by Angie Thomas in 2017, which tells the story of Starr Carter, an African American 16-year-old girl who witnesses the death of her childhood friend on the part of a white police officer, who eventually will be acquitted. Specifically, this work wants to underline the closeness between the novel and the movement, both for the topics it deals with (e.g. police violence on the African American community and racial profiling) and for the figure of the protagonist, who embodies the prototype of a young activist, who wants her voice to be heard, as had happened for the three women, founders of the movement. Moreover, the paper highlights how the author’s choice to employ the “Young adult” genre is ideal for spreading the message among young people, providing them with a positive role model that hopefully inspires them to do the same in their everyday lives.
