This thesis presents the project of a Total Work of Art theorised and realised by contemporary artist Hermann Nitsch through the Theatre of Orgies and Mysteries founded at the end of the 1950s, placing it in its context of belonging, meaning the Viennese Actionism, and analysing its multiple components with particular reference to the performative one and the problems it raises on an ethical and interpretative level. The hostilities that have accompanied the artist's career since his actionist beginnings in the 1940s, and the media resonance that his project attracts even after his death in April 2022 make him one of the most heavily debated controversal examples in late 20th century Contemporary Art. More specifically, the thesis aims to understand the aesthetical and ontological reasons behind the sadomasochistic violence of the O.M. Theatre and proposes a comparison between Nitsch's performative approach, which makes use of real animals and blood, and the non-violent one used in the numerous animal protest actions carried out in Italy's major cities and fronted by the anti-speciesist movement Iene Vegane, against which the artist had to confront on several occasions: defined by the press as a "flashmob" but, in some ways, closely bordering on the hybrid "Artivism", this kind of performance finds its strong point in its scandalous aspect and serves as an exemplification/exemplificator of the problematic as well as factual intersectionality in the Contemporary Art scenario that Hermann Nitsch's work itself represents.

Abstract

Hermann Nitsch between performance art and "artivism": a contoversial relationship
