An insight into culture and Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC): a case study of the NICE programme

The aim of this thesis is to describe the characteristics of a virtual exchange programme, which is the NICE Programme, in relation to the concepts of culture and Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC). In order to do so, an overview of the concepts of culture and Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) that are the most relevant for this thesis is provided, together with an overview of the NICE Programme. In addition, the answers to a questionnaire that was administered to some NICE ex-participants are analysed. The questionnaire contained questions on some specific matters of culture and ICC. One of the aims of this study is to provide a theoretical insight into culture and Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) to indicate the complexity of these topics. Furthermore, a subsequent analysis of the NICE Programme in relation to some specific matters concerning culture and ICC aims to identify some of the benefits and possible limitations of this virtual exchange programme.

L'obiettivo di questa tesi è descrivere le caratteristiche di un virtual exchange, ovvero il NICE, in relazione ai concetti di cultura e Competenza Comunicativa Interculturale (CCI). A tal fine, viene fornita una panoramica sui concetti di cultura e Competenza Comunicativa Interculturale (CCI) più rilevanti per questa tesi, insieme a una panoramica sul NICE. Sono state inoltre analizzate le risposte a un questionario somministrato ad alcuni ex partecipanti al virtual exchange. Il questionario conteneva domande su alcune questioni specifiche di cultura e CCI. Uno degli obiettivi di questo studio è fornire una visione teorica della cultura e della Competenza Comunicativa Interculturale (CCI) per indicare la complessità di questi argomenti. Inoltre, un’analisi del NICE in relazione ad alcune questioni specifiche riguardanti la cultura e la CCI mira a identificare alcuni dei benefici e delle possibili limitazioni del NICE.
