The object of study of this thesis is the US television series Cagney & Lacey, a show that in the Eighties, years of the Second Golden Age of American television, played a significant role in the national and international television market. In a historical period of marked conservatism both within civil society and in the world of popular American entertainment, Cagney and Lacey attracted attention for its liberal and innovative stance. It did so first of all by questioning traditional gender roles, thanks to the presence on the show of two women who carry out the profession of police officers who also maintain strong friendships, relationships that until then had been reserved only for men, thus convincingly reflecting the changed position of women in the society of that period. It has also proved to be one of the few television series that has made serious attempts to address the issues posed by the feminist movement as well, thanks to the contribution of many professional women with exceptional creative production, directing and writing skills. In this work we tried to identify what are believed to have been the innovations made by Cagney & Lacey and we tried to demonstrate how these innovations have influenced in a decisive way the subsequent television series, influencing not only the development of the detective story. but also the medical and legal series thanks to the definitive recognition of the leading role of female characters.
