Stand-up comedy is a comedic performance to a live audience in which the performer addresses the audience directly from the stage. Its comedic strength is often related to jokes which are extremely culture bound, making it difficult for people who do not share the same cultural background to understand them. The aim of this thesis is to give a definition of what stand-up comedy is, concentrating on British humour, and to analize which strategies translators could use to adapt jokes in another language. The study will be based on the stand-up work of the English comedian Ricky Gervais.
