“Tout est bien?” Voltaire contre l’Optimisme dans son Poème sur le désastre de Lisbonne.

This thesis proposes an analysis of the main issues that Voltaire addresses in his work Poem on the Lisbon disaster, starting from the description of the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, to the religious aspects in which the author believes, reconsidered after the disaster. From the analysis, in particular, emerges the significant criticism of the German philosopher G. W. Leibniz and his disciples, who preached optimism according to which: "tout est bien dans le meilleur de mondes possibles". Also reflects on Voltaire's condemnation of those who believe that evil on earth does not exist and that misfortunes and catastrophes are somehow connected to a divine punishment that God hurls against sinners, thus promoting a further harmful attitude in a society that has always had religious tensions. Finally, the last points deal with a deepening related to the author's religion and the influence that the poem had in his subsequent works.

L'elaborato propone un'analisi delle principali questioni che Voltaire affronta nella sua opera Poème sur le désastre de Lisbonne, partendo dalla descrizione del terremoto di Lisbona del 1755, fino ad arrivare agli aspetti religiosi in cui crede l'autore, riconsiderati dopo il disastro. Dall'analisi, in particolare, emerge la critica significativa al filosofo tedesco G. W. Leibniz e ai suoi discepoli, che predicavano l'ottimismo secondo cui: “tout est bien dans le meilleur de mondes possibles”. Inoltre, si riflette sulla condanna che fa Voltaire verso coloro i quali credono che il male sulla terra non esista e che le sventure e le catastrofi siano collegate in qualche modo ad una punizione divina che Dio scaglia contro i peccatori, promuovendo così un ulteriore atteggiamento nocivo, in una società che ha da sempre tensioni religiose. Infine, gli ultimi punti trattano un approfondimento legato alla religione dell'autore e all'influenza che ha avuto il poema nelle sue opere successive.
