Il "Lazarillo de Tormes" e il problema del realismo

The aim of this work is to provide a general overview of the picaresque novel and of the progenitor of this literary genre, 'La vida de Lazarillo de Tormes y de sus fortunas y adversidades'. It then focuses on nineteenth-century realism and its themes with the aim of understanding whether this work from 1954 anticipated what was to become the most popular literary genre of the nineteenth century. The initial part of the thesis focuses on the characteristics and peculiarities of the picaresque novel and its emblematic form, tackling interesting themes: from the social reformism present in the work to the question of the difference between 'honra' and 'honor' involving the protagonist, and then arriving at the actual analysis of the characters present in Lazarillo. Behind their figure lies a harsh criticism of 16th century society and in particular the Catholic Church, which is why the work was banned from circulation by the Inquisition tribunal. Finally, the work concludes with a section on 19th-century realism and more specifically an analysis of the commonalities between realism and Lazarillo.

Il presente lavoro nasce con l’obbiettivo di fornire una visione generale sul romanzo picaresco e in particolar modo sul capostipite di questo genere letterario, ‘La vida de Lazarillo de Tormes y de sus fortunas y adversidades’, soffermandosi poi sul realismo ottocentesco e le sue tematiche con lo scopo di comprendere se quest’opera del ‘54 abbia anticipato quello che sarà il genere letterario più popolare dell’800. La parte iniziale della tesi si concentra sulle caratteristiche e sulle peculiarità del romanzo picaresco e della sua forma emblematica, affrontando temi interessanti: dal riformismo sociale presente nell’opera alla questione sulla differenza tra ‘honra’ e ‘honor’ che coinvolge il protagonista, giungendo poi all’analisi vera e propria dei personaggi presenti nel Lazarillo. Dietro la loro figura si cela in realtà un’aspra critica nei confronti della società cinquecentesca e in particolar modo della chiesa cattolica, motivo per il quale la circolazione dell’opera venne vietata dal tribunale dell’inquisizione. Infine, il lavoro si conclude con la parte riguardante il realismo ottocentesco e più specificatamente l’analisi di quelli che sono i punti in comune tra il realismo e il Lazarillo.
